New Ideas about Contemporary and Experimental Videoart
It’s a renowned fact that videoart language and visual experimentation has fallen out of technology‘s spell.
New surveys and researches have outlined a new way of visual experimentation and a new vision of reality and subconscious. Now, the many-sided investigation fields are assimilated, re-thought and “augmented”.

Invited artists are chosen as a representative group of emerging young operators already known and well-established in the Italian and international contemporary art scene. The videos belong to different categories, ranging from animation to performance, in order to give as a complete view as possible of today's videoart.

“Just a provocation or a further will to investigate what’s not on the ordinary agenda: is it possible for videoart to address a topic such as “signing out” and “deconnecting” when everything now, art included, seems ultimately connected within and cast into the very same socio‐political‐ethical web that wraps our daily life?  Of course, the answer is yes: it is still possible, or better it is rather urgent! CROWNS

The Crowns are made from a single blade of grass, woven several times.

The knots are forming a circle, a mathematical structure where all the fragile connections of different souls depict the unity of inner and outer worlds.

The last knot, tied to the first one, testify a circular movement inside the crown so that the end is always a new beginning. 

These works would like to raise questions about the border between nature and culture, animate and inanimate matter, or between pure subjects and mere objects. The crowns are the result of the necessity of a revision and decolonization, not just of the obsolete understanding of animism, but also of the modern imaginaion of which it is an expression.

Io Non-Io

Alcune note su di me e i miei tanti non-io (o quasi-io) presenti in ordine sparso in internet


Non sono architetto e il design non è il mio campo d’azione. Purtroppo il New York Times non si è mai occupato di quello che faccio. Non vivo a Los Angeles, California, ma da qualche anno condivido i bui inverni con gli abitanti di Berlino.

Pur essendo originario del nord Italia non sono mai stato iscritto alla Lega Nord: non abbiamo nulla in comune e nulla da spartire (il termine “spartire” spiega bene cosa penso degli attuali partiti italiani). Da Facebook mi sono allontanato definitivamente nel 2011 e non ho alcun rimpianto.

Vado sempre volentieri a Venezia ma non ho mai avuto l'ambizione di diventarne sindaco. In politica mi candiderei solo per capire quanti della mia famiglia mi voterebbero.

Pur dovendomi definire artista non so dipingere. Evidentemente non sono io quel pittore, “l’angelo pop dell'arte” che ha vissuto in Spagna per anni e che purtroppo è scomparso nel 2008.

Non mi sento particolarmente responsabile, tanto meno ho ruoli di responsabilità presso fondazioni e centri studio che si occupano di formazione e produttività (che a essere precisi, in questi tempi di crisi nera, basterebbe la sola produzione per gridare al miracolo).

Per quanto anch'io sia laureato in economia, non sono dottore commercialista né revisore contabile. Definirmi esperto di fiscalità d’impresa e di family business sarebbe un tantino esagerato.

Sono incuriosito dai prodotti biologici ma dei rimedi naturali ne so relativamente poco (esistono pure i rimedi innaturali?) e in quanto a benessere mi trovo mio malgrado sul versante opposto.

Ai concerti mi divertivo a distorcere il suono della chitarra (prima la fender, poi l’epiphone). La batteria è uno strumento troppo faticoso e rumoroso per i miei gusti. I ritmi latinoamericani mi fanno orrore, niente a che vedere con le sonorità nordiche, inglesi e americane di cui mi nutro abitualmente.

Ah, dimenticavo.... per pomodori, patate, banane e quant'altro è meglio chiedere altrove. Anche se per un vegetariano come me, frutta e verdura sono sacre e insostituibili, non sono io il fruttivendolo di Montebelluna (che detta in questo modo sembrerebbe un progetto artistico alternativo...).

Così alla fine, se si escludono dalla ricerca di google, la verniciatura di mobili nel veronese, la pizza d’asporto nel padovano, la storica radio vicentina, il centro polivalente in un parco del torinese (la lista si ingrossa continuamente) con buona dose di fortuna è addirittura possibile imbattersi in qualche traccia casuale che parli di me e dei miei lavori.

SEMIOTICS OF AN EMPTY SPACE

Semiotics of an Empty Space is a video made in an abandoned foundry.
Inside the big and silent building, very little remains of the original machinery and production equipment.

Although the subjects are listed in alphabetical order (ashes, bell, cross, direction...), a sense of irreversibility defines the whole work.

This video depicts a spiritual journey, a sort of mystical experience, around a place, more imagined than showed, a place where to throw doubts and raise questions about absences and changes, life and death.

Nowhere Flag

A flag with three different shades of grey, is raising, waving and falling on a hill, away from human settlements but very close to some trenches built during the First World War.

It’s an unknown flag, without history and name, whose colours nobody wants or intends to recognize (*). And maybe, thanks to its unclear references and expectations, this flag keeps its presence measuring itself with terrestrial elements and finding an appropriate dimension inside a natural environment where borders and memberships have no reason to exist.

(*) only with a few rare exceptions, the color grey is never used by countries for their official national flags

Exercise #49

Exercise #49 is a performative video where the symmetry of elements (a table and a pair of chairs), the synchronization of movements and the balance between the upper and the lower sides change constantly. That fluid situation, arising from delays and accelerations, tries to bring into question a set of agreed and accepted rules.
